Packing Tips

Packing - Where to Start?

If you're doing your own packing, make sure you give yourself plenty of time; at least six weeks before your move date and plan carefully.

Careful planning and packing will save you time, money and a lot of hair pulling.

Check your coverage or insurance policy for details that may pertain to customer packed goods.

  1. Keep the following handy for packing:

    • Boxes

    • Marking pen

    • Bubble wrap

    • Newspaper and tissue

    • Tape and scissors

    • Tape measure

  2. Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly.
Purchase special boxes for dishes (such as china barrels) wardrobe, and other special items.

  3. Pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes.
Label cables and tighten transit screws. If removing
screws, tape them to the objects they are removed from.

  4. Avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one box.

  5. Label each box and include the following:

    • which room it should go in

    • whether it is fragile

    • if it should be loaded last so it can be unloaded first.

  6. Cushion contents in packing material with bubble wrap, newspaper, or tissue.
Save room by using towels and blankets to wrap fragile items.

  7. Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in wrappings for the move.

  8. Pack medicines in a leak proof container.

  9. Carry all valuables and irreplaceable items with you.
It is also a good idea to keep all moving documentation on your person.

Un Packing - Where to Start?

Even though you think your move is over once the movers have left and the last box has been brought in from the truck. Don't relax just yet, there's still some stuff to do besides unpack.

  1. Check all major appliances and electronics to ensure nothing was damaged during the move. Your insurance policy may have a limited time in which to make a claim. Since these are big ticket items, you should make sure they're all working.

  2. Before you can check your electronics, you better make sure all your services are up and running.

  3. Keep all receipts and documentation related to your move in one file and keep the file in a safe, secure place. Make sure you have your Bill of Lading and payment receipt.
